Although as a child I was unknowingly drawn to teaching, I feared standing in front of people and not knowing the answer. As I have taught over the years and even more during my time at Carleton, I have learned that I can stand in front of people when I have to and that my job is not to always have the right answer. In fact, I can use those times when I don\u2019t have the answer to allow my students to grow in different areas \u2013 and these areas of growth transcend their understanding of physics. During these times I can model how one faces the unknown while challenging the students to face the unknown with me. My greatest joys as a physics teacher are 1) helping students understand the relevance of physics to their lives and 2) helping students develop skills that empower them to achieve whatever goals they choose to pursue beyond Carleton. Problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, metacognitive skills all transcend the particular physics theories that I teach in my classes. Therefore I want to be an educator who not only stays abreast of the new physics theories, but also seeks to improve the ways that I develop the transcendent skills in my courses \u2013 the skills that will serve students well whether they pursue physics, painting and\/or politics beyond Carleton.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
